Binaural dissimilarity and optimum ceilings for concert halls: More lateral sound diffusion

چکیده

Ceiling shapes for concert halls are proposed that, on the basis of prior extensive subjective evaluations, should result in high listener preference of the hall's acpistoca; response tomusic. These shapes are based on the premise that as little as possible of the early sound energy should arrive at a listener's ears in the "median" plane (the vertical symmetry plane through the listener). While this goal is inherently approached in old-style, high-and-narrow halls, its realization i modern, low-ceiling halls requires pecial ceiling shapes and surface structures to keep early, median-plane sound away from the listener's ears.

Perception of music dynamics in concert hall acoustics.

Dynamics is one of the principal means of expressivity in Western classical music. Still, preceding research on room acoustics has mostly neglected the contribution of music dynamics to the acoustic perception. This study investigates how the different concert hall acoustics influence the perception of varying music dynamics. An anechoic orchestra signal, containing a step in music dynamics, wa...

Concert halls with strong lateral reflections enhance musical dynamics.

One of the most thrilling cultural experiences is to hear live symphony-orchestra music build up from a whispering passage to a monumental fortissimo. The impact of such a crescendo has been thought to depend only on the musicians' skill, but here we show that interactions between the concert-hall acoustics and listeners' hearing also play a major role in musical dynamics. These interactions co...

Hearing myself with the others - Sound levels in choral performance measu

The choir singer has two acoustic sipals to attend to: fhe sound of his or her own voice (feedback), and the sound of fhe rest of fhe choir (reference). The balance in loudness between feedback and reference is governed mainly by the room acousfics. While earlier experimenfs have shown fhat singers have a fairly large tolerance for imbalance, wifh references ranging from -23 dB to +5 dB, experi...

ICE - towards distributed networked computermusic ensemble

The deployment of distributed loudspeaker systems in the context of computermusic ensembles is explored in this paper, expanding the vision of a computermusic ensembles to a flexible dynamic musicians network. With the IEM Computermusic Ensemble (ICE) the idea of playing in a virtual concert hall over network, rendered to one ore more real or simulated concert-halls has been explored: Each musi...

Disentangling preference ratings of concert hall acoustics using subjective sensory profiles.

Subjective evaluation of acoustics was studied by recording nine concert halls with a simulated symphony orchestra on a seat 12 m from the orchestra. The recorded music was spatially reproduced for subjective listening tests and individual vocabulary profiling. In addition, the preferences of the assessors and objective parameters were gathered. The results show that concert halls were discrimi...
